When clients ask me what to wear for their at-home maternity session, my honest answer is always: less is more, and simple is timeless. The goal isn't to put together the most elaborate outfit — it's to wear something that feels like you, looks beautiful in photos, and won't distract from the real subject: that gorgeous bump and the love surrounding it.


Start with Your Home as Your Guide


One of the things I love most about in-home sessions is how personal they are. Your space already tells your story, so your outfits should work with it, not against it. Take a look around — what are the dominant tones in your home? Warm whites, soft linens, muted greens? Those are your best friends. When your clothing coordinates with your environment, everything feels cohesive and intentional, like the whole scene was meant to be together.


Go Neutral, Go Earthy


My personal recommendation? Reach for neutrals and earthy tones. Think warm creams, soft taupes, dusty sage, terracotta, and gentle browns. These colors photograph beautifully, they never go out of style, and when you look back at these images in ten or twenty years, they'll still feel classic. Trendy colors and bold patterns can date a photo quickly — and these are images you'll want to treasure forever.


What to Avoid


A few things that can pull attention away from the beauty of the moment:

  • Busy patterns or bold prints — they can be distracting in photos and clash with your surroundings
  • Logos or graphic text — these pull the eye and can make images feel less timeless
  • Too many competing colors — if you and your partner are both wearing different bold tones, it can feel visually chaotic


If you're including a partner or older children, try to keep everyone in the same color family. They don't need to match perfectly — just coordinate.


Keep It Comfortable


You're growing a human. Wear something that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable. Flowy dresses, soft fabrics, and fitted pieces that celebrate your belly are all wonderful choices.
